Combat in Path of Exile 2 asks a bit more from you than simply holding down one button and watching the screen melt. You still care about damage, resistances, and whether your gear is worth keeping, and plenty of players will still track things like PoE 2 Currency while planning upgrades. But the moment enemies start swinging, the game feels far less passive. You move, you roll, you block, and you pay attention. A bad step can hurt. A clean dodge can save the whole fight. That change gives even small encounters a sharper edge.
Skills feel less trapped by gear
The new skill setup is one of the biggest reasons the game feels cleaner to play. In the first Path of Exile, your chest piece or weapon could decide whether a build felt smooth or awkward, just because of socket colors and links. That old pressure has been pulled away. Skills now sit in their own menu, and each active ability can be shaped with support gems. It sounds simple, but it changes the mood completely. You're not staring at armour and thinking, “Well, this is useless because the links are wrong.” You're thinking about what the skill actually does, and how far you can push it.
Uncut Gems make experimenting easier
Uncut Gems also take a lot of the early-game sting out of character building. Instead of waiting around for the one gem your idea needs, you can turn an uncut gem into the skill that fits your plan. That's a quiet change, but a good one. Players love weird builds. They always have. The problem was getting the pieces in place before boredom set in. This system gives you more room to try a cold spell here, a bow skill there, or some strange hybrid setup that probably shouldn't work but somehow does. And if it fails, fine. You learned something without wasting half a campaign.
Combos matter more than button mashing
Once fights get busy, the design starts to show its teeth. You're not just stacking one attack and hoping numbers carry you. A caster might chill a group, lock them down with a freeze, then break them apart with a heavier follow-up. A melee character might use a setup skill first, then punish at the right moment. Tags such as Projectile, AoE, and Channeling make these interactions easier to read, but they also open up some clever choices. A lightning spell can become a chaining shock tool. A basic attack can turn into part of a much bigger plan. It's still an ARPG, yes, but it's got more timing in its bones now.
Builds still matter, but hands matter too
The passive tree hasn't lost its identity. It's still large enough to make a new player blink twice. The difference is that it feels more like a way to strengthen your style rather than the only thing holding the build together. If you like swapping elements, reacting to boss patterns, or changing your approach mid-fight, the game gives you room to do that. Players who use marketplaces and services such as U4GM for game currency or items may still chase better gear, but better gear won't replace awareness. Path of Exile 2 seems built around that idea: smart planning gets you started, but clean execution keeps you alive.
