The growth of SAF is being driven by several factors. International and national regulations, such as the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation initiative, are mandating minimum SAF blend percentages. The EU's Green Deal and Fit for 55 package are pivotal in shaping the market landscape, encouraging investments in cleaner fuel alternatives. Corporate sustainability goals are a powerful driver, with airlines committing to net-zero targets and using SAF to reduce their Scope 1 emissions.
The SAF market could reach a value of USD 15 billion by 2030, indicating a robust growth trajectory. Industry stakeholders are increasingly investing in research and development to create viable SAF options that can be integrated into existing fuel supply chains. Government incentives, such as tax credits and subsidies, are helping to bridge the cost gap between SAF and conventional fuel, accelerating adoption.

The primary challenge facing SAF is its higher cost compared to conventional jet fuel. The price premium is driven by the limited scale of production and the cost of feedstocks. However, as production scales up and technology matures, costs are expected to decrease. The industry is heavily investing in new SAF production facilities. For example, Neste and Airbus signed a partnership to advance SAF use, and Shell announced a strategic partnership to develop a new supply chain for SAF.
