A related service is the MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) API, which allows for the sending of rich media content like images, GIFs, and short video clips. More recently, this category has expanded to include APIs for OTT (Over-The-Top) messaging platforms, most notably the WhatsApp Business API. Location APIs provide access to Location-Based Services (LBS), allowing an application to request the approximate geographical position of a mobile device from the network. This is distinct from GPS, as it can work indoors and does not require a specific app to be running on the phone. This is used for asset tracking, fraud detection (e.g., comparing a user's phone location to a credit card transaction location), and logistics. The market also includes emerging types like Video APIs, which provide the tools to build custom, real-time video chat applications (similar to Zoom or Google Meet) directly into a website or mobile app, and the future promise of 5G APIs, which will expose network capabilities like latency and bandwidth control to developers.
