The bed of inert material also allows for the introduction of limestone, which captures sulfur dioxide (SO₂) during combustion, providing in-situ emissions control.

Flexibility and Fuel Handling

The CFB technology offers unparalleled fuel flexibility. It can efficiently burn a wide range of fuels, including low-grade coals, high-ash coals, petcoke, biomass, and various waste materials. This is a significant advantage over PC boilers, which are generally limited to a narrower range of pulverized coals. The fuel flexibility of CFB boilers makes them a key solution for waste-to-energy and biomass co-firing applications.

The simplicity of the fuel preparation system in a CFB boiler also reduces capital costs and maintenance. Unlike PC boilers, which require complex and energy-intensive pulverizing mills, CFB boilers can accept fuels with a larger particle size, simplifying preparation. The circulating fluid bed boiler market is benefiting from this flexibility, particularly as industries seek to utilize a wider variety of feedstocks.

Emissions and Environmental Performance

CFB boilers are recognized for their superior environmental performance. The low combustion temperature reduces thermal NOx formation, and the in-situ sulfur capture using limestone is highly efficient, often achieving over 90% SO₂ removal. This reduces the need for expensive downstream flue-gas desulfurization equipment. PC boilers, while capable of achieving low emissions, often require extensive post-combustion controls such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for NOx and wet scrubbers for SO₂.

Technological advancements in boiler design are enhancing the efficiency and performance of CFB systems. The strong focus on sustainability is driving the adoption of waste-to-energy solutions, a key application area for CFB technology.
