The penalty wall and the gear treadmill

Then the game does its usual trick: you progress, and your sheet numbers quietly get worse. By the time you're deep into the acts and pushing endgame, you're staring at a big cumulative penalty that effectively demands better gear. It's not personal, it's just PoE. You replace rings you loved, you ditch boots with great movement because the res roll is too low, and you take the "boring" quest reward because it patches Lightning by 12%. People who don't adjust end up thinking a zone is overtuned, when really they're walking around with paper defenses.

Overcapping is how you stay stable

Once you're comfortably capped, you'll notice another problem: you don't stay capped. Curses, exposure, map mods, and enemy skills can strip resistances mid-fight. If you're sitting at exactly 75%, one nasty debuff pushes you into the danger zone instantly. That's why experienced players overcap—aiming for extra resistance above the cap, so your "real" value stays safe when something tries to rip it down. It's also why Chaos resistance stops being optional later. You can get away with ignoring it early, but endgame chaos hits don't care about your excuses.

Building for endgame pressure

At some point, resistance planning becomes part of your build, not just your gear. You start choosing passives for max res, hunting specific suffixes, and keeping swap pieces for nasty content. It's not glamorous, but it keeps your runs smooth and your deaths rare. And when you're upgrading fast—rolling maps, replacing slots, trying out new setups—it helps to have a plan for how you'll fund it, especially if you're considering a Divine Orb buy to keep your crafting and trading moving instead of stalling out mid-progression.
